The center bearing (center support bearing) carries the middle of a two-piece propeller shaft on rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles — pickups, vans, and trucks. A sealed ball bearing rides inside a rubber cushion bolted to the chassis crossmember: the bearing lets the shaft spin freely, while the rubber isolates driveline vibration from the body and allows the shaft to flex as the rear axle moves with load and road surface.
When the rubber cushion perishes or the bearing wears, the symptoms are hard to miss: a droning or rumbling noise that rises with road speed, vibration felt through the floor under acceleration, and a clunk on take-up as the shaft sags out of line. Left unattended, a collapsed center bearing puts the universal joints outside their working angle and wears them out prematurely.
