Engine Mounting

Engine Mounting, Insulator Engine

Engine mountings (also called insulator engine or motor mounts) support the engine and transmission on the car body or engine cradle (sub-frame). Each mount carries part of the powertrain's weight, absorbs combustion and idle vibration, and controls engine movement under torque. Most vehicles use three or four mounts — typically two engine mounts plus one or two transmission mounts — and they work together as a set.

A failing mount usually shows up as vibration through the floor or steering wheel at idle, a clunk when shifting between Drive and Reverse, or visible engine rock when revving under load. On diesel pickups, which produce strong low-rev torque, a collapsed mount overloads the remaining mounts and can stress exhaust joints and cooling hoses — so worn mounts are best replaced as a set.
