The shock absorber mounting (strut mount) is the rubber insulator that connects the top of the shock absorber or strut to the vehicle body. It carries the suspension load into the chassis, damps the impact between strut and body over rough surfaces, and isolates road noise and vibration from the cabin. On front struts the mount also locates the steering axis — many designs incorporate a bearing so the whole strut turns with the wheels — which makes its condition directly relevant to suspension alignment and steering response.
Worn mounts announce themselves with clunking from the strut towers over bumps, creaking or binding when turning the wheel at low speed, and harsher ride as the rubber loses its damping. Because a deteriorated mount lets the strut's working angle wander, it can also cause cupped tire wear and a steering wheel that doesn't return to center cleanly. Mounts are usually replaced together with the shock absorber or in axle pairs.
